Diagnostics of the battery charging system

Diagnostics of the motorcycle charging system is carried out to determine the performance of the circuit responsible for charging the battery and powering the entire electrical system as a whole.

What is it for?

Despite its apparent simplicity, each of the elements of the charging circuit has its own parameters, which tend to change over time, which ultimately leads to the failure of the entire system and the failure of one or more components at the same time. And this, in turn, is additional costs for repairs!

So, for example: the low capacity of the battery "forces" the relay-regulator (RR) to work with a double load, which leads to the failure of the latter. Result - replacement (RR) + battery replacement;

An open or short circuit of one of the generator windings can lead to failure (PP) and, accordingly, complete discharge of the battery. The result is the replacement of all charging cells;

A faulty relay-regulator with an increased charging voltage can "kill" all electronics on a motorcycle, from lamps to tidy and brains! Etc....

The charging circuit consists of a generator, a voltage regulator relay and a battery. It is not always possible to determine the state of the charging system with an ordinary voltmeter or multimeter, since they will only show the voltage at the battery terminals, and this is where modern diagnostic tools come to the rescue, such as RING analyzers and the only stationary diagnostic stand Motolight in Belarus.

The charging system diagnostic process includes measuring the following parameters:

- voltage on the phases of the generator;

- absence of short circuit of the generator phases to ground;

- measurement of generator winding currents;

- diagnostics of the voltage regulator relay operation;

- diagnostics of operation and battery charging;

- diagnostics of connectors and connections of the charging circuit.

After the diagnostic process, a checklist of parameters is issued, and a sticker is glued to the battery case indicating the date of the test.
